Manifoldness of Tasks Within a Substantial Learning Environment: Designing Arithmetical Activities for All

Offering adequate tasks for students of all capabilities is one of the great challenges for teaching and learning mathematics. Based on the results of the project NaDiMa, the theoretical background as well as opportunities of Substantial Learning Environments (SLEs) that allow Natural Differentiation (ND) are presented. For learners, working with SLEs should contribute to a deeper mathe­matical understanding as well as to the development of general learning strategies. Examples for ›number triangles‹ refer to general issues for the design of different types of tasks and problems. Conclusions are drawn for teacher’s role and teacher education.
