DZLM members research and develop PD courses for teachers and facilitators in mathematics at nine university locations throughout Germany. They are divided into the following areas:
The DZLM Executive Board makes strategic decisions for the DZLM. It includes a department head from each location as well as the director of the DZLM, the employee representative and a representative of the sponsor (Deutsche Telekom Stiftung). The Extended Executive Board also includes the management, the other department heads and another representative of the Deutsche Telekom Stiftung. The activities of the DZLM are coordinated and represented by the office at the Humboldt-University of Berlin - in close cooperation with the Director and the Executive Board. It consists of management, project management and communication.

Three DZLM departments work along the education chain and (school) level specific on research and development of continuing education programmes for early, primary and secondary education. They are subdivided into working groups of the department heads who work together at the nine university locations of the DZLM and beyond.
The Department of Early Education develops concepts for courses for early childhood educator PD and facilitator PD to promote early mathematical education in day-care centres and supports this development process through accompanying research. Thus the DZLM expands its offers for early education and reacts to the requirements of the education and orientation plans in early education.
The starting point was the advanced PD programme "EmMa - Erzieherinnen und Erzieher machen Mathematik" (EmMa - educators make mathematics), which was carried out in 2014/15 and empirically tested for its effectiveness.
In 2018, PD facilitators were prepared to carry out the training concept "EmMa - Erzieherinnen und Erzieher machen Mathematik" independently. In this way, the training needs of early childhood educators are to be continuously met.
In a recently started cooperation with the project "LuPE - Lehr- und Praxismaterial für die Erzieherinnenausbildung" (LuPE - Teaching and Practical Material for the Vocational Training of Educators), from September 2019 onwards teachers of the technical schools for educators in NRW will be enabled to integrate mathematics didactic basics into the training of early education professionals.

Three other comprehensive programme departments work independently of school levels and develop comprehensive standards and central questions for research, development and dissemination (development and research programme as well as digitisation) for the Centre.
The Development Programme Department acts as a comprehensive programme department and coordinates the development and dissemination of courses for teacher PD and facilitator PD and PD materials - in close consultation with the other programme departments.
It develops standards and design principles for the offerings of the school level departments, which are research-based and tried and tested in practice. In addition, the head of department is the initiator and first point of contact for cooperation partners from ministries, district governments and state institutes and maintains further national and international contacts to networks such as the European STEM Professional Development Centres Network.

The Department of Digitisation coordinates and initiates the topic of digitisation at the DZLM and deals with the use of digital tools in PD courses and teaching. In addition, the department provides technical support for the DZLM's online resources and develops them further for information and professional development courses. This includes the information pages on the DZLM's activities and goals, the training and materials platform, the self-learning platforms and the Moodle learning platform, which enables a blended learning approach for PD courses. The encyclopaedic mathematics didactics Wiki Madipedia of the Gesellschaft für Didaktik der Mathematik (GDM) is also supervised and expanded by members of the department.

The Research Programme Department coordinates and advises DZLM research projects aimed at professionalising teachers and PD facilitators and promotes young scientists within the framework of a graduate programme.
In addition to the systematic support of research in the specialist departments, we are investigating in the DFG-funded NoTe project and the subsequent Note-Act and NoTe-S projects how the noticing of PD facilitors can be promoted through the use of video vignettes from PD courses and what needs to be taken into account when designing such facilitator PD modules.
